OH YOU’RE FROM NEW JERSEY?

“Oh, you’re from New Jersey?” — said with that tone. Every Jersey person knows the tone. The slight pause. The mental image of the Turnpike and reality TV. Here’s a guide to the reactions, and the correct responses.

Reaction 1: The Turnpike Face

They picture smokestacks and traffic. Correct response: “That’s a 15-mile stretch. The other 8,700 square miles are farms, beaches, and mountains.” Watch their worldview crack.

Reaction 2: The Reality TV Reference

Someone will mention that show. Correct response: a deep sigh, followed by “New Jersey has 9 million people and the highest concentration of scientists in the world.” Then change the subject to their state’s embarrassing TV show. Every state has one.

Reaction 3: “What Exit?” (From a Non-Jersey Person)

They heard the joke and they’re trying it out. It’s adorable. Correct response: answer with your actual exit. When they look confused, you know you’ve found a civilian.

Reaction 4: Genuine Curiosity

The rare good one. They’ve heard the pizza is amazing and want to know where the real shore towns are. Correct response: adopt them. Give them the full briefing — beaches, diners, bagels, the Delaware Water Gap. Make them a believer.

Reaction 5: Secret Jersey Envy

They mock Jersey but vacation in Cape May every year. They make Turnpike jokes but lose their minds over a real bagel. Correct response: smile. You know. They know. Everybody knows.
